Where do I Begin?

Healthcare is vast field containing countless opportunities that allow you to help and provide services to people. Whether you choose to pursue nursing and develop close relationships with patients or decide to provide life-saving medicine through pharmacy, there are a few commonalities needed for success.

Steps for Success:

1. Have a Strong Academic Foundation

  • Academics is at the heart of any field available in pre-health. Taking courses such as:

    • Biology

    • Chemistry

    • Physics

    • Anatomy & Physiology

    • Calculus & Statistics

    • English Composition

  • Taking these courses aid in critical thinking, problem solving and learning the necessary foundational information for pre-health careers.

  • Performing well is just as important since most pre-health programs require you to have a 3.5+ GPA.

2. Take Advantage of Opportunities

  • Community service, volunteering, and shadowing are all important steps in obtaining scholarships and entrance to pre-health programs.

  • By participating in these activities, it shows institutions you possess initiative and leadership skills.

  • Those seek out these opportunities will find success.

3. Strive to be Well Rounded

  • Having a competitive GPA and participating in community service are necessary, but it is important to be well rounded.

  • Learning to communicate effectively, manage your time, and act professionally help to contribute to your overall character, making you more competitive for pre-health program positions.

  • Having a hobby, joining a club, or playing a sport is another great way to show institutions you have more to offer than just academic success and volunteering experience.

4. Start Now

  • Start doing the steps above as soon as possible!

  • If you are still in high school, begin pushing yourself to take the proper math and science classes, find and take initiative for leadership opportunities, and follow a passion outside of school.

  • Starting sooner rather than later opens the doors for more opportunities down the road, so do not wait until it is too late.
